Getting Started

When researching a career in business, consider the following:

  1. What careers are there? Am I aware of all the options?
    • Skim through the extensive lists of over 12,000 possible jobs/careers using Career Planner.
  2. Have you taken into consideration the following:
    • Is the job part of a dying industry? Should I look into something else more secure/promising?
    • Projected Job Growth?  Is the job in high demand? High demand usually equals better chances of job openings.
    • Average Pay? Are you ok with what that career has to offer?
    • Job Duties/Responsibilities?  Are they doable? Will I be able to carry out these responsibilities?
    • Work Environment? What does it entail? Office setting? Outdoors? Offsite? Traveling?
    • Education/License/Certification Requirements? What does each job require? Will I have the required education/license/certifications for my career? Will experience through an internship within a company help my chances?
    • Relocation? Certain jobs may be offered locally but there may be a better opportunity in another town, city, or state. Will you be willing to relocate for that job opportunity?
  3. Have you talked to your Academic Advisor and the Director of Career Services about your interests? Remember they can guide you to the right path making sure you are in the right program.
