Citations and Avoiding Plagiarism: Plagiarism

What is Plagiarism?

PLAGIARISM

Using words, ideas, or works originating from someone else and passing it off as your own. It includes:

  1. Copying other peoples' words and works word-for-word.
  2. Summarizing in your own words without giving credit.
  3. Citing incorrectly, even if by mistake.

Why should we cite?

THE IMPORTANCE OF CITING

Citing is especially important to:

  1. Avoid plagiarism
  2. Give credit where credit is due.
  3. Demonstrate that you're familiar with existing research.
  4. Help readers find the sources you used.

Academic Honesty at Trinity

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Plagiarism and citation are both issues related to "academic honesty," a concept that describes reading, writing, and researching ethically while in college. Academic honesty is important to ensure that the information that comes out of academia (including your work) is trustworthy.
