Microsoft Word Basics: Keyboard Shortcuts

The basics of using Microsoft Word 365

 

This section provides helpful shortcuts you can use in Word that allow you to forgo using the mouse. 

Keyboard Shortcuts

Backspace: delete a character to the left

Ctrl+1: Set single-spacing

Ctrl+2: Set double-spacing

Ctrl+A: Select the entire document

Ctrl+B: Bold formatting

Ctrl+Backspace: Delete one word to the left

Ctrl+C: Copy 

Ctrl+D: Open the Font dialog box

Ctrl+Delete: Delete one word to the right

Ctrl+E: Center a paragraph

Ctrl+F: Search a document

Ctrl+I: Apply italic formatting

Ctrl+L: Left-align a paragraph

Ctrl+R: Right-align a paragraph

Ctrl+S: Save a document

Ctrl+U: Apply underline formatting

Ctrl+V: Paste 

Ctrl+X: Cut 

Ctrl+Y: Redo an action

Ctrl+Z: Undo an action

Delete: Delete one character to the right

F7: Run a spelling and grammar check

Shift+F7: Open the thesaurus.
